Top Gun: Maverick breaks another box office record, surpassing 1997’s Titanic to become Paramount’s highest-grossing movie ever domestically.

Top Gun: Maverick breaks another box office record, officially beating Titanic to become Paramount’s highest-grossing movie of all time. After numerous delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick soared into theaters at the end of May, earning rave reviews from both audiences and critics. The film, which acts as a sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, brings back Tom Cruise’s hotshot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and sees him train a new batch of fighter pilot recruits for a dangerous mission.

Top Gun: Maverick had a strong opening weekend, earning $126.7 million, but positive reviews and strong word of mouth have kept the film’s weekend-to-weekend box office drops at a minimum. The film has broken numerous records since it was released, not only quickly becoming the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career, but also becoming only the second movie since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 to earn over $1 billion. Despite strong competition in the form of Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Lightyear, Top Gun: Maverick has continued its strong performance at the box office, recently even surpassing The Dark Knight‘s total domestic earnings.

According to a new report from VarietyTop Gun: Maverick has just broken yet another record by surpassing James Cameron’s 1997 smash hit Titanic. Kosinski’s film is now Paramount’s highest-grossing movie of all time domestically in its 110-year history. Ticket sales for Top Gun: Maverick now stand at $601.9 million domestically, beating Titanic‘s $600.7 million opening run (although the latter’s number has since risen with subsequent theatrical re-releases).

Considering the unpredictable theatrical landscape of today, Top Gun: Maverick‘s impressive box office numbers suggest that audiences are more than willing to return to theaters for select projects. Crucially, the film appeals to both fans of the original Top Gun and newcomers alike, featuring plenty of callbacks to the 1986 film while also blazing new ground with the introduction of fresh cast members and innovative filmmaking techniques. Top Gun: Maverick boasted an expansive and aggressive marketing campaign ahead of release, which surely helped with initial ticket sales, but the film’s high quality and strong reviews are a major contributor to its continued success all these weeks later.

It remains to be seen whether Top Gun 3 will ever happen, but Maverick star Miles Teller has revealed that he’s already had conversations with Cruise about a potential third installment. Considering this film’s ground-breaking box office numbers, Paramount would likely be highly receptive to the idea of a follow-up, especially if Cruise also puts his weight behind it. Now more than a month removed from its release, Top Gun: Maverick continues to delight audiences around the world, a testament to Kosinski and Cruise’s dedication to making the long-awaited sequel one of the most thrilling and satisfying theatrical experiences of recent memory.
